The biggest reward for Beverly was regaining her self-confidence.

45 Pounds Lost!

Height: 5'3", Age: 32

Before starting the Mayo Clinic Diet, I was overweight, unhappy, self-conscious and unhealthy. I was always on the sidelines watching everyone else have fun, while longing to participate in activities with family and friends. I avoided swimming at all costs because I didn’t want anyone to see me in a bathing suit — not even my husband. I wore pants and long sleeves all summer long, no matter how hot it was outside. At my weight, finding comfortable, stylish, age-appropriate clothes was challenging to say the least, which often made leaving the house a struggle.

When I lost my 60-year-old father in May of 2011, I knew it was finally time for me to get healthy. My father was first diagnosed with heart problems around age 34, and I could see that I was going down a similar path that could possibly lead to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. My husband suggested the Mayo Clinic Diet as a way to get started. It seemed so straightforward, and since I had no interest in calculating and adding up "points," I decided to give it a try. After losing my dad, I was determined to find a long-term solution, not a quick fix. I dropped about 10 pounds during the Lose It! phase by adopting (and breaking) the habits outlined in the book. After seeing the changes that occurred in just two weeks, I was completely sold and have been following the Mayo Clinic Diet ever since.

By sticking to the Live It! principles of the diet, I have lost and kept off 45 pounds. My health has improved greatly, and there are no concerns or red flags for heart disease or type 2 diabetes, which is a giant relief!

Rewards
Aside from health improvements and weight loss, the biggest reward for me was regaining my self-confidence. I love joining in activities that I had previously sat out, and my husband and I have participated in several 5K runs. I have also started playing softball again, and I’m currently on two different teams. I have no problem wearing shorts in the summer anymore, and I even wear bathing suits at waterparks with confidence!

Favorite snack
Of course, I eat lots of fruits and vegetables for snacks now, but for a special snack I like natural peanut butter (portioned out) with bananas on a thin slice of whole-grain bread.

Diet highlight
The Mayo Clinic Diet doesn't feel like a diet because the focus is on changing your lifestyle as a whole. When I first considered starting it, I thought, "Great, another diet that won't work and will leave me hungry all the time." However, I never feel deprived. After Lose It!, I could have whatever I wanted in moderation, as long as I recorded it in my Journal.

Best advice
The best advice I would tell anyone who is struggling to lose weight is to take baby steps. You didn't gain the weight overnight, and you won't lose it overnight either. I truly believe that anyone can follow the Mayo Clinic Diet because you can tailor it to your life by choosing your favorite foods and exercises.

*Participants can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.
