More to explore

Our behavioral scientists have compiled these additional insights for you to consider as you begin your journey with Mayo Clinic Diet.

What’s driving your motivation

Motivation to be healthier and improve your lifestyle can be driven by positive or negative forces. You have lots of good quality motivation, which is fantastic because it suggests you’re focussed on reasons that will keep you on track for longer.

The quality of your motivation is highest for healthy eating, so you may find it’s easier to focus on this behaviour when trying to manage your weight.

Your identity and aspirations

We behave in ways which reinforce who we want to be. You want to identify as someone who is Sensible and someone who is Driven so try combining these images of yourself with your goals to help you stay on track. For example, rather than setting your mind on an outcome such as reaching a certain weight, focus on who you want to be and how changing your behavior can help you be someone who is Sensible.

You also seem to be mostly driven by personally-rewarding aspirations, which are the most motivating because they come from within. When you set goals for weight loss, try to tie them to things that are important to you (i.e. purpose, health). Tying your goals with what matters to you most can help you be more successful.

Tips to make it fun

When you do things you love they require very little effort. Weight loss can have so many positive impacts on your life, but it can also be challenging at times. So here are some suggestions on how you can combine what you love with a healthy lifestyle to help lift you up.

Watching entertainment

Unwinding by catching up on your favorites shows or movies is important. It is also important to make time to do something active. Better still, try tuning in to your favorite show while doing some gentle stretches or exercises.

Relaxation

Use yoga as a form of relaxation but also for resistance exercise, which helps maintain muscle tone when losing weight. Taking time out to relax can help you maintain the right mindset for healthy living.

Reading and music

Reading and listening to music is a great way to tune out and relax. If you find yourself running out of time in a day to exercise, try going for a walk or jog while tuning into your favorite audiobook or music.

Eating and drinking

Enjoying good food is a passion for many people. Use this passion to find new, healthy meals that taste great and satisfying your inner 'foodie'. Mayo Clinic Diet has 100s of delicious, healthy recipes to keep you inspired.

Pets

If you have a dog, walk it often to help you be more active. If you don’t, volunteer to walk a neighbor’s dog. Caring for pets of any kind can boost your sense of wellbeing which is important for all-round health.
