This is a traditional French toast recipe that can easily be dressed up with one of our fresh fruit compote recipes. Use your bruised and imperfect fruit to make a compote.

  • Cooking spray, 1 two-second spray(s)
  • Skim milk, 1 cup(s)
  • Egg substitute, ½ cup(s)
  • Eggs, 1 large
  • Vanilla extract, 1 tsp(s)
  • Cinnamon, ground, 1 tsp(s)
  • Ground cloves, 0.13 tsp(s), (1/8 tsp)
  • Whole-wheat bread, 6 slice(s)

Method

Lightly coat a large sauté pan or griddle with cooking spray and preheat to medium-high heat.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the milk, egg substitute, egg, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves.

Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture until covered. Then place the bread in the sauté pan or on a griddle and cook approximately 1½ minutes or until golden brown. Using a spatula, flip the bread over and cook another 1½ minutes.

Serve with fresh fruit compote, fresh fruit, a sprinkle of powdered sugar or maple syrup.
