If you're considering adding medication to your weight loss journey but don't have a healthcare provider to support you, we'll be there. You'll be guided by the Mayo Clinic Diet for Weight-Loss Medications program and this clinical care:
A board-certified clinician from Amwell* will help determine if weight-loss medications are right for your journey, and help you stay on track with clinically-monitored digital care.
If appropriate, your clinician may prescribe FDA-approved medications for weight-loss such as GLP-1s. They will consider your health history and budget to choose the best option.
The clinical team from Amwell* will help you navigate the process, submitting your insurance forms and answering any questions you may have. If your insurer won't cover medication, the clinical team can offer other affordable options.
*Clinical care provided by the Amwell Medical Group® via the Healthy Weight Platform, exclusive to Mayo Clinic Diet.
Access to clinical care is just one aspect of the program: Mayo Clinic Diet for Weight-Loss Medications provides the structure and support you need to achieve healthy, successful weight loss with medication such as GLP-1s. Membership includes these top-rated features.

The Mayo Clinic Diet program does not currently take insurance although you may be able to use HSA/FSA funds to pay for the program. Weight-loss medications may be covered by your insurer. If you have purchased the Clinical subscription, the clinical team from Amwell will submit the relevant forms to help you gain insurance coverage for medication. We recommend contacting your insurer to find out if your plan covers weight-management medications.
No. The cost of medication is a separate expense that is not included in the membership fee. If you purchase the Clinical subscription, the clinical care team will submit insurance forms for the prescription on your behalf. We also recommend contacting your insurer to find out if your plan covers weight-loss medications.
Yes. Your Clinical subscription includes initial and follow-up visits with a physician from Amwell. Your schedule of visits may vary depending on your specific needs but typically you will see a physician when starting the program, at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. You can message your provider between visits. If you have to see a provider to discuss side effects or challenges with your medication, these extra appointments will also be covered as part of your membership fee, within reason. If you need to reschedule an appointment, please do so at least 24 hours before the scheduled time to avoid additional fees.
During your initial visit with a clinician from Amwell, you will be evaluated for appropriateness of medication based on several guidelines. These guidelines are intended to help the provider decide the pharmacologic intervention most appropriate for you. All medications prescribed as part of the program are FDA approved. (Note: While phentermine is an FDA-approved drug, it is a controlled substance, so any phentermine-containing product cannot be prescribed via a telehealth provider.)
Medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of obesity work primarily by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness. This leads you to consume fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its weight, resulting in weight loss. It is important to follow a healthy weight management plan like Mayo Clinic Diet while using weight-loss medication to prevent regaining the weight when medication stops.
Note: While phentermine is an FDA-approved drug, it is a controlled substance; any phentermine-containing product cannot be prescribed via a telehealth provider.
