Weight loss medications are not an easy way out. They are not a magic pill...to banish our extra weight. These medications help us to stick to a low calorie diet, fight back hunger, and make us feel full. That way, it is easier to commit to these important lifestyle changes.

Pricing, insurance and cost questions

How much does the Medical Weight Loss Rx program cost?

The Mayo Clinic Diet Medical Weight Loss Rx program costs at $129.99 per month plus a $99.99 start fee. If you commit to 6 or 12 months and pay upfront, the price reduces to $89.99 or $79.99 per month respectively, plus a $99.99 start fee. While the program is in beta, the monthly fee will be reduced by $20 per month. View our pricing page for the latest pricing.

Does the Mayo Clinic Diet take insurance?

The Mayo Clinic Diet program does not currently take insurance although you may be able to use HSA/FSA funds to pay for the program. Weight-loss medications may be covered by your insurer. If you are participating in the Medical Weight Loss Rx program, we will submit the relevant forms to help gain you insurance coverage for medication. We recommend contacting your insurer to find out if your plan covers weight-management medications.

Is the medication cost included in my membership fee?

No. The cost of medication is a separate expense that is not included in the membership fee. If you purchase the Medical Weight Loss Rx program, the clinical care team will submit insurance forms for the prescription on your behalf. We also recommend contacting your insurer to find out if your plan covers weight-loss medications.

Is the cost of physician appointments included in the membership fee?

Yes. Your Medical Weight Loss Rx membership includes initial and follow-up visits with a physician from Amwell. Your schedule of visits may vary depending on your specific needs but typically you will see a physician when starting the program, at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. You can message your provider between visits. If you have to see a provider to discuss side effects or challenges with your medication, these extra appointments will also be covered as part of your membership fee, within reason. If you need to reschedule an appointment, please do at least 24 hours before the scheduled time to avoid additional fees.

Medication questions

Does the Mayo Clinic Diet recommend specific weight-loss medications?

During your initial visit with a clinician from Amwell, you will be evaluated for appropriateness of medication based on several guidelines. These guidelines are intended to help the provider decide the pharmacologic intervention most appropriate for you. All medications prescribed as part of the Medical Weight Loss Rx program are FDA approved. (Note: While phentermine is an FDA-approved drug, it is a controlled substance and so any phentermine-containing product cannot be prescribed via a telehealth provider.)

How do weight-loss medications work?

Medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of obesity work primarily by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness. This leads you to consume fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its weight, resulting in weight loss. It is important to follow a healthy weight management plan like Mayo Clinic Diet while using weight-loss medication to prevent regaining the weight when medication stops.

What medications are currently FDA-approved and used for weight management?

  • Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy)
  • Tirzepatide (Zepbound)
  • Liraglutide (Saxenda)
  • Phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia)
  • Orlistat (Alli, Xenical)
  • Naltrexone-Bupropion (Contrave)
  • Setmelanotide (Imcivree)

(Note: While phentermine is an FDA-approved drug, it is a controlled substance and so any phentermine-containing product cannot be prescribed via a telehealth provider.)
