Who qualifies for semaglutide injections?

There's a healthier way to lose weight with weight-loss medication. Discover the Mayo Clinic Diet for Weight-Loss Medications.

Semaglutide, a groundbreaking medication in the weight-management space, has emerged as a potential solution for individuals struggling with obesity. Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These drugs mimic the effects of GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and promotes a feeling of fullness.

Semaglutide has shown remarkable efficacy in helping individuals lose weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Especially when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.

FDA-approved semaglutide injections

There are currently two FDA-approved semaglutide injections

  • Ozempic is approved to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in addition to diet and exercise. Ozempic is also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and known heart disease.
  • Wegovy is approved to help adults and children aged 12 years and older with obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m²) or some adults with overweight (BMI greater than 27 kg/m²), who also have weight-related medical problems, to lose weight and keep the weight off, in addition to diet and exercise.

Both medications are only available with a prescription and may be covered by your health insurance.
